Monument protection
Service description
The Lower Monument Authority is responsible for the protection and maintenance of monuments. The aim is to preserve the city's historical heritage. Monuments can be a wide variety of things, but they must be of particular significance for human history, for cities and settlements or for the world of work. If this is the case, they must be listed. Only then are they monuments and their careful treatment is guaranteed for future generations.
Monuments have different characteristics. Robust castles or delicate rococo stucco require different treatment than a half-timbered farmhouse or the parterre of a baroque garden. Monument conservation means dealing with monuments, treating them with care, focusing on long-term preservation, undisturbed appearance and sensible use.
Monument protection is subject to the procedural steps stipulated in the Monument Protection Act. They are not always immediately comprehensible to all those affected and lead to a wide variety of questions. In addition, monuments must be maintained and used sensibly. In the process, changes are naturally made to a greater or lesser extent. Here, too, a number of questions arise and bureaucratic steps cannot be ruled out. We therefore aim to provide our clients with comprehensive advice on all aspects of monument protection and preservation.
Many buildings in the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer are listed as historical monuments. A so-called monument area statute applies to the inner city center. Structural changes to monuments and also in the vicinity of monuments generally require a permit.
