Climate protection and climate adaptation remain important future tasks for the pilgrimage town of Kevelaer. Even under challenging financial conditions, the city is continuing its activities and focusing on concrete measures for 2026.
"We have to use our resources responsibly - both financially and in terms of our environment," emphasizes Mayor Dr. Dominik Pichler. "Our goal is to continue to develop Kevelaer in a sustainable and liveable way."
Climate team reorganized
The city's climate team brings together various specialist areas: Maike Böhm (Climate Protection), Sebastién Belleil (Environment) and Heinz-Theo Angenvoort (Mobility) are already working on key topics. Chantal Fouquet joined the team in November 2025 as Climate Adaptation Manager.
Mobility: suitable for everyday use and climate-friendly
The city is specifically strengthening local mobility: with better conditions for cycling and walking, additional bicycle racks, more safety at danger spots and projects such as the "LeihLastenRad". Other measures such as cycle lanes are also being examined. The service is supplemented by bus connections in the region, the RE 10 ("NiersExpress") and several community bus routes, which are particularly important in rural areas.
"Our goal is to shape mobility in such a way that all citizens can be self-determined, barrier-free and reliably mobile, regardless of whether they own a car," says Mobility Manager Heinz-Theo Angenvoort.
Environment: Strengthening habitats
In the environmental sector, the city is continuing its work with tree planting, flowering areas and measures to protect habitats, among other things. "Many measures work on a small scale - but they make a noticeable difference to our city," says environmental officer Sebastién Belleil.
Climate protection: focus on energy
Climate protection focuses on energy saving, renewable energies and heat supply. Information and advice services for citizens are to be further expanded. "We want to provide guidance and show what is actually possible," says Maike Böhm
Climate adaptation: preparing for tomorrow
At the same time, a climate adaptation concept is being developed. It is intended to help the city be better prepared for heat, heavy rain and other consequences of climate change. Among other things, more green spaces, shading options and cool places in the city are planned. "Preparedness means taking the right steps today for tomorrow," explains Climate Adaptation Manager Chantal Fouquet.
Together for Kevelaer
In 2026, the city will continue to focus on exchange and participation - for example through events and information services. Citizens, companies and institutions are invited to get involved.
