Naturalization
Service description
Foreigners who live in Germany for a longer period of time and want to stay here have the opportunity to acquire German citizenship. They then receive a German passport, can vote and be elected in Germany, enjoy freedom of movement within the European Union, can travel visa-free to many countries, freely choose their profession in Germany and live here permanently.
Naturalization procedures are very complex and usually take a long time to process. Applicants are informed about the options and requirements in detailed consultations. Various authorities and public bodies are involved in the actual application process. Among other things, the economic situation, personal circumstances, effects of any criminal offenses on the procedure and the constitutionality of the person concerned must be examined. German language skills are an essential characteristic for social integration and also a prerequisite for naturalization into the German state. Proof of this is, for example, successful participation in an integration course, a language diploma (Zertifikat Deutsch B 1), a school-leaving certificate or completed vocational training
