The cold season is just around the corner and with it the risk of frost damage to water meters and pipes. Just a few degrees below zero can cause water to freeze in pipes and cause damage. You can reliably prevent this with simple measures.
- Protect water meters
In unheated rooms such as basements or shafts, the water meter can freeze quickly. A blanket or insulating cover keeps it warm and prevents damage.
- Secure external cables
Disconnect garden hoses, shut off supply lines and open the valves so that no water is left behind. This will prevent outdoor pipes from freezing.
- Insulate pipes and cables
Wrap unprotected pipes with insulating material or simple scraps of fabric. Well-insulated pipes are much less likely to freeze.
- Keep basement windows closed
Make sure that windows and doors in unheated cellar rooms remain closed in winter. This prevents pipes from cooling down unnecessarily.
- Do not turn off the radiator completely
Leave the heating on a low setting in rooms that are rarely used. A constant base temperature also protects pipes from frost.
- Observe building connections
Building connections in new buildings or shells are also at risk from frost. Regular checks and simple insulation provide effective protection.
