June 15 is Global Wind Day - a good opportunity to take a look at our local wind farms: In Kevelaer, the nine wind turbines in Twisteden and Keylaer produce around 54 million kilowatt hours of electricity every year. In an average year, this is enough for around half of Kevelaer's electricity consumption - clean, reliable and directly on site. Nationwide, 2024 was a record year: 35% of German electricity came from wind energy - more than from any other renewable source. Together, renewables even generated around 63% last year.
A look at Kevelaer shows an even better balance: as of December 1, 2023, electricity consumption was 112 gigawatt hours (GWh), while at the same time 122 GWh was fed in from renewables - an increase of 10 GWh.
Electricity production in Kevelaer was distributed as follows: 7 biomass plants generated around 15 GWh, 1,834 photovoltaic systems supplied 30 GWh and the total of 15 wind power plants fed an impressive 77 GWh into the grid.
Although 2025 has been a low-wind year so far, this does not change the central role of wind power in the energy transition. Together with our partners BW Kevelaer and Bürgerenergie Schwarzbruch-Nord, we are committed to further expanding this strong source of electricity.
