Heat protection
When the temperatures rise, it can quickly become unpleasant - for your body, circulation and mood. We have put together a few simple but effective tips to help you get through the hot days in good health. In short: how to keep a cool head even during heatwaves.
1. drink a lot - but drink properly
Water is now your best friend. Drink regularly - even if you're not thirsty. Water or unsweetened teas are best. Alcohol and sugary drinks? Better leave them out, as they also dehydrate the body. For something fresh between meals: Add lemon slices, cucumber or mint to your water - it tastes great and looks good!
By the way: Fresh drinking water is also available at our public drinking water fountains - for example at Kapellenplatz and in the St. Jakob brine garden. Simply fill up your bottle and off you go!
2. eat light - enjoy smart
Heavy food in the heat? Not a good idea. Instead, opt for light, water-rich foods such as salads, melons, cucumbers or tomatoes. Not only are they refreshing, they are also good for your circulation. And to be honest: a little ice cream in between lifts your spirits and is a good idea!
3. exercise? Yes, but with a plan
Intensive activities are best planned for the cooler hours in the early morning or evening. Between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., look for shade and take it easy. Your body will thank you for it.
4. do not forget sun protection
Whether you're in the park, on the balcony or out and about in the city - protect yourself from direct sunlight. Light, airy clothing, sunglasses, headgear and, of course, sun cream with a sufficient protection factor are essential.
5. use cool places
When it gets too hot outside: Take a break in air-conditioned buildings such as libraries, shopping centers or cafés. Shady spots in parks or by bodies of water also offer a welcome way to cool off. Our tips include Kapellenplatz or the Way of the Cross in the heart of our pilgrimage town.
6. cooling down your home - here's how
Keep windows and curtains closed during the day to keep the heat outside. Then ventilate well in the early morning or late evening to let in fresh, cool air.
7. pay attention to each other
Heat can quickly become dangerous, especially for older people, children or people with pre-existing conditions. Check in regularly with your neighbors, friends or family members and look out for signs such as headaches, dizziness or confusion.
8. stay up to date
Find out about the current weather situation regularly - for example from the German Weather Service (DWD). There you will find daily heat warnings and helpful tips on how to deal with extreme heat.
Also helpful: Download the free NINA warning app from the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance onto your smartphone. The app not only informs you about heat warnings, but also about many other important emergency situations in your area.
Heat doesn't have to be a problem - if you know how to deal with it properly. With a little preparation and attention to ourselves and others, we can all get through the hot days better.
Stay cool and take care of yourself!
